How to select art that's right for you

Purchasing art can be a confusing experience.  You want to choose a work of art that you would love to live with, because you'll be looking at it for a long time.

Here are some suggestions that may help you make your art buying decisions.

When you see a painting, for instance, ask yourself if you would like to be caught up in the world of that artist's imagination, as portrayed in that work of art.  This artist is making you experience something through his eyes, as he transfers reality as he sees it to paper or canvas.  Is it a vision that pulls you into a world that you find exciting, unusual, delightful, peaceful, joyful, challenging, touching in some way?  What experience do you want to have where you will hang this picture?  Do you love the picture so much you will find a place to put it?

A picture can have a decorative surface value that lends a visual charm to a room.  It can also have depth to it beyond the surface appeal, that you discover as you spend more time viewing it and being drawn into the scene.  The picture must talk to you in some way.  It will let you experience certain feelings, thoughts, or emotions whenever you lose yourself in it.

Let yourself look at pictures in this way.  Give the artists a chance to let you know their viewpoint.  When you go to a gallery, spend more than four seconds on each piece as you walk past it.  There can be amazing discoveries waiting for you.  The longer you view a picture, the more you will see in it and the more you will experience it.  Then you will know if what you are experiencing is what you would like to live with.

Beauty, love and happiness are three things that very often are missing in our lives. These are some of the things that an artist wants to share with you.
