Unusual himalayan cat lion cut photos for the cat art in
The Cat Gallery, and a few other examples of the lion cut on other
breeds
If you have a cat with a lion cut and would like to show off its fashionable fur coat, please send in your photos. Each cat looks different with this cut, so the more kinds of cats we can show, the more we can all see how this unusual cut would look on a particular breed. One recurring theme is the attitude of the cat. Initially, they may be annoyed by having to go through the process, but afterward, they are very happy with their new cut (many probably feel much better without the mats they had before and will be much more playful), and their owners are delighted. Additional pictures will be added over time--be sure to 'Refresh' with each visit.)

Boo Boo's Lion Cut
|
Our Himalayan does not like to have his tummy touched, much less combed. So, his baby fine hair there and where he licks under his chin gets easily matted. The best solution to this problem was to give him a lion cut. Since Boo Boo is very camera shy, it's hard to get good pictures of him. But I manage to catch him off guard sometimes. Look at the color change on Boo Boo's back. With successive trimmings, his back has become darker where he was shaved. He looks like a different cat. Unfortunately, if the mats are too bad under his chin, he loses some of the fullness of his ruff. Sometimes the ball on the tip of his tail is large; sometimes, small. But where he was shaved, he feels like velvet to the touch. He likes it, too. We can tell. We've noticed that the final result varies with the groomer who does the lion cut. It's also possible that they don't cut as close during the winter, so the cat will be warmer. Boo Boo's lion cut is even growing out already by the time some of these photos were taken. Sometimes he has fur left around his feet--like boots for his dark points. FYI, it costs $40 with our groomer for the lion cut where we live in Southern California. Boo Boo just got another lion cut, much closer this time (see photos below), and he looks just darling--like a miniature lion. Oddly, the last couple of times his back has been getting lighter. Maybe it's gray hair. He is around 15 years old. It's interesting to see what a small (all right, skinny :-)) cat he really is. With long fur, he looks much larger. I had a visitor say this cut was cruel to the animals. I can assure you there is nothing cruel about it. What is cruel is to have a cat with baby fine hair that turns into thick mats that pull at the skin. And this is a cat whose skin is so sensitive he cannot tolerate most of his body being combed. The mats must be painful. This cut is a wonderful relief for these cats. We can tell that Boo Boo is grateful from the way he acts after he has the cut. |

Boo Boo's back
was ligher with this trim, but he wasn't shaved or cut as close to the
skin this time. Maybe that partially explains the color
difference.
"My sister-in law is from Oklahoma and has a slight accent. She has cats and when she lived in the south she would take them to the groomers and have what is called a Line Cut. To her a line cut is when all of the fur hanging down below the cat's tummy is taken off (because it gets matted or snarled). When she moved to Chicago
with my brother, one of the cats fur got all tangled up during the move so
she took it in for a line cut. She was quite surprised when she heard the
price as it was twice as much as it was down south. She confirmed with the
groomer that he understood what a line cut was and he said "yes, I know
what a LION cut is." It seems her accent came out sounding like LION not
LINE and this is how her cat was returned to her. (see PHOTOS) She cried
for a week...but not as much as the cat. It was November in Chicago and
the cat needed all the fur it had."

Lisa Haviland's Bogi Attached is my own version of
the lion cut. My dad is a veterinarian in Greenwood, Indiana, a
suburb of Indianapolis. This was a team effort. Bogi
is a
12 year old part Persian cat. The mats collect on her tummy and
chest and rear end, which is where she hates to be brushed, so when I try
to groom her in those areas she slashes my wrists, arms, and hands with
her back claws. Anyway, we had to sedate her for her cut. Her
tail didn't have mats, and I couldn't bring myself to shave off the pretty
tail. Went farther down on the legs than a lion cut. Hence, I
call this the Poodle/Punk/Lion cut. Bogi seems to like her new
cut. Prances and struts around my condo and plays more
now.
This is my cat Laddy. He's approximately 12-13 years old. This is the first time I've tried the lion cut. He had tons of mats on his back, so I thought this cut would be appropiate! I love it! I got the idea from your website. Thanks! |

Jessica's Samson This picture was taken less than five minutes after I took
the clippers to him. I had to ask him if he wanted a cookie to get him to
look at me because he was still fuming over his haircut. Poor
Sampson! It needed to be done though. He was starting to look like a
raggamuffin. The job would have been impossible without
Sampson's dad helping me hold him still. That's his "I'm tired
of being pushed and pulled for so long" face. It was right
after I got him home from the salon. But I
think he's MUCH happier now.
Satie admiring her new haircut I recently moved to Las Vegas, where I initially had to board my Satie (Himalayan and possibly Siamese mix) at the vet for the first couple of days. When I arrived at the vet with her, I had inquired about giving her a trim. They suggested giving her a "lion cut", which I had never heard of before. Although I was a bit reluctant, they assured me that she would love her new look. I did some on-line research prior to giving the okay, and your website was the one source that gave me the courage to go ahead with the procedure. Needless to say, when I picked her up, she was even more adorable than before. She seemed a little upset at first, as she does not like to be away from home. Once she got settled, however, I could not keep her away from the mirror! Satie is thrilled with her new home and her new look. Thank you for the photo's you have posted on your website. I noticed that you suggest to viewers that they are able to submitt photo's. I would love to submit a couple, but wasn't sure how to go about it. I have attached a couple of my girl, Satie, and was hoping that you could post them on your website. Sincerely, Mindy Gutterman
