RICK'S CAT

My cat's name is Sandy.  He was born March 25th 1987.  He is now mostly blind.  Here is a picture of him swimming in a lake and another of him piloting a plane.

The “Blind Arthritic Athletic Cat”
Age= 16 people years / 112 in cat years
By Mr. Rick Slobodian 250-542-5942
Email=  hammalund@shaw.ca

If you’ve ever been in downtown Vernon, no doubt you’ve seen Sandy. He rides on my shoulder like a bird, & walks on a leash like a dog. Since arriving in Vernon in Nov 2001, you could see us anywhere. Everywhere I go (with Sandy) on my shoulder, he brings smiles to people in cars, walking, kids, seniors, everyone and everywhere smiles or wants to pet him.
He was born Mar 25th 1987. He is male seal point, however the vets say he has longer teeth, and larger eyes than normal, and he has a straight tail. After my Mom died in 1993, then after my Dad died in 1997, and I was still suffering the effects I had from a serious work related accident, Sandy became very distressed, and somehow went into a coma-like state or a stroke. Now he is almost totally blind.

He is very active, even though he has PolyArthritis arthritis in his back legs. I walk him 500 meters a day on the grass, then I put him up on a tree and he climbs down, then we walk together up and down 2 flights of stairs. Imagine that “A Blind Cat With PolyArthritis” walking up and down stairs & climbing trees. The only reason he can do all of this is I give him premium cat food as well as a product called “Cat Joint Revive” which is a special blend of glucosamine and 6 other ingredients that make the glucosamine more absorbable. The “Cat Joint Revive” capsules are made here locally in Kelowna BC by a company called 4everPets  their website is www.4everpets.com
Sandy has been coming to the Okanagan Valley (the fruit growing region of Canada) ever since he was born. He spent the last 3 days with my mom in the hospice in 1993 when she died. He also spent 3 days in 1997 with my dad when he was in the hospice dying, and he spent time with me in the hospital after I got electrocuted.
Every night he licks and washes my hair before I go to sleep, because when you pet a cat it reminds them of their mother licking them, and since my mom & dad are dead, and his mom & dad are dead, I’m his mom & dad, and he’s my mom & dad.

P.S. Thanks to you, and our Lord, Sandy has been getting a lot of email from around the world.  So far, Sandy, through your website, comes up in the top 3 hits of 20 search engines around the world, including search engines in Germany, Switzerland, and England.  Many emails ask that if he's arthritic, how he can be so active at his age.  The reason for this has been added above.

KERRY AND DAN'S CAT

Dear Folks at The Cat Gallery:  We have a very pretty Siamese with peaches and cream fur, and beautiful blue cross eyes. Hillary is one of the smartest and unique personalities I have ever known.
Here is a list of the things she does on command for a kibble treat, of course ...
1. Sit
2. Beg
3. Turn around
4. Shake paw
Here are the things she does on her own:
1. She LOVES music, whereas most cats will dodge under the bed for quiet. She will follow me around the house, fascinated, when I am practicing singing classical music for church. She also will sit near the P.A when my husband practices on his guitar. She will even try to make noise along with Dan when he is practicing with the band.
2. She meows when we sneeze (could be the noise she doesn't like). Yet, she seems concerned. It is a specific sounding 'meeeow' when we sneeze. It does not matter where we are in the house. Sometimes Hillary will not stop mewing until we say 'thank you kitty.'
3. And yes. She plays fetch with a little toy brown mouse (specifically the one with the red ears and tail). She will bring it back to you to throw again. Understands when we say 'bring the mousy closer,' most of the time she will, sometimes she won't. It all depends on how much she wants to see us get up to grab her mouse toy.
I wish that we had a video camera to catch all of this cuteness.   Hillary only behaves this way in the comfort of her own home.  Sincerely, Kerry and Dan Balog
P.S. Hillary is looking over my shoulder right now watching as I type :)

DEBBY'S CATS

Buttons is our oldest seal point who cries for his dinner. I say he sings for his supper.  He hasn't missed a beat in seventeen years.  Lily is our "floppy" lilac point siamese who is overweight and LOVES to go out into the hall outside our apartment and FLOP down on the ground.  Dilly is our new one-year-old seal point.  She retrieves toys made of wire and pipe cleaners.  I have a special basket with a handle on it for her and a cart with wheels that she hops into when she wants to go for a ride.  She also has a special pull-out vinyl tunnel that she loves to romp back and forth in and if you walk past it while she is in it, she will hit you from the inside.  The three siamese hang out in a shopping cart beside the radiator below our windowsill.  Very much in love.  Debby Barratt

ROSE'S CAT

My Ginger is partial to milk, although the jug is kept covered with a plastic basin and a metal cake tin over the top.  One day I observed him lifting off the tin by hooking his paw under it and gradually easing it off and then repeating the process with the lighter plastic basin, before helping himself to the contents of the jug. He is also partial to yoghurt as you can see from the photo below! He's quite a character!  All good wishes, Rose at Roses Photos and Articles

JIM'S CAT

My husband Jim didn't much like cats until this particular kitty came along.  So he named the orange tabby cat "Gordon" after his boss.  That way he could say "Stop licking your butt, Gordon" and thus release a little stress.  Gordon used to ride around everywhere on my husband's shoulders.  He also loved to go for rides in the truck, where he would sit on the driver's shoulders and watch the world go by.  Gordon could jump straight up from the floor to as high as the ceiling to nab paper balls we taped up there for him.  He liked to get us up in the middle of the night by sitting on the top of the toilet tank and rocking the lid back and forth.  Another funny thing Gordon did was that he routinely stole socks (and only socks) out of the laundry basket.  He would carry them past us and take them downstairs to line his bed.  We'd tell him to stop sorting the dirty clothes and he would run off as quick as he could with his prize.  Perhaps his funniest trick was his ability to make Jim get up off the couch and feed him.  My husband is a channel surfer.  Gordon figured out very quickly that he could make the couch potato sprout.   He did this merely by sitting in front of the box on the TV that my husband needed to aim the remote control at.  Worked like a charm every time.  Who trained who?

LEENA'S CAT

IP Ragtime King of Finland is a ragdoll. A very big one. King is very playful. His favourite game is hide and seek. I'm hiding and he is looking for me. He is happy when he knows where I am but the minute he can't find me he sits down and starts to cry like a baby and he knows I'll reveal myself. I would call that cheating.  Leena Virtanen at http://lv.nordkatt.net

OK, where are you?

LIZ'S CAT

My cat Mittens is so STRANGE!!
~She has taught me to meow like she does.  Normally we meow to each other to get one-another's attention, or when I wake her up as a 'Good Morning' meow.
~Then there is the game she plays when she has a little 'Kitty-Energy-Outburst'.  There is a spot on a wall where the wallpaper looks like a lizard tail, and she can't quite catch the lizard!  She will wack at it until she has to sit down and catch her breath.
~Num.1 kitty toy of the month-Marbles!!  She will wack it around the hard floor all day if she could, only it gets stuck under desks and in other little spots where she can't get it.  If it rolls onto the carpet, then she will pick it up in her mouth and drop it onto the hard floor and watch it bounce before she attacks it again.
~Last but not least, the prowl!  Look out! Because if you get in her way, then you will have a severe case of Cat Scratch Fever!  She will dash about the house at top speed, growling like a maniac and carrying something small in her mouth, like a toy mouse.  She growls!  Like a mix between a purr and a meow.  A strange cat.  Liz

 MELANIE'S CATS

I have a cat, Buster, that is about 8 months old.  He really likes wet food but we only give it to him once in a while as a treat.  To compensate for this he takes his dry food, scoops it into the water, lets it get nice and soggy, than scoops it out with his paw, and volia he’s got wet food.
We also have another cat that is about a year older, Ashes.  Buster loves Q-Tips, and Ashes loves opening the bathroom cupboard by catching the door with her nails and after a few tries she has the door wide open and lets Buster in to have free reign of all the Q-Tips he wants.  It’s really quite amusing 'cause its almost like the two of them are in crime together.  While Ashes tries to get the door open, Buster sits there waiting to jump in.  Ashes also enjoys trying to catch the second hand on the clock.  Melanie, Jeff, Ashes & Buster

 CARLEY'S CAT

Pooka is our little snugglepuss.  He is black with a white spot on his regal chest.  Forever and a day, I have heard how smart dogs are and how dumb cats are.  The typical statement I hear all the time is, "If cats are so smart, why can't you teach them tricks".  And so, the challenge was on.  Pooka loves to eat.  What an incentive?  Just normal everyday food has inspired him.  I believe any cat can be trained if their owners are willing to spend the time.  I have yet to meet a cat that wasn't intelligent.  They all have their individual qualities that make them unique and endear them to us.  I have taught Pooka to sit, sit on hind legs (he cheats with this one, by grabbing my hand with his two paws), roll over and back the other way, and finally he shakes.  All of these he learned in a couple of days with the exception of roll over which took two weeks.  Oh, and did I say that he speaks Chinese. (hehe)  I would do this hand motion, say roll over and literally push him over.  My boyfriend, being silly one day said "maybe he doesn't understand English.  Maybe he is Chinese."  Just joking around, I did my usual hand gesture in front of him and said "ching, chang, chong".  Pooka rolled over the very first time.  We all had a great laugh and my daughter still tells people to this day that our cat speaks Chinese.   Pooka is most definitely her cat.  He is extremely tolerating of her playtime antics.  He is not that patient with anyone else.  He will let her push him around in a baby buggy with a blanket over and a pillow under him for as long as she pleases.
