EVE'S CATS

It is appropriate that we start off with The Cat Gallery's Russian Blue host, Fledermaus.  This strong-willed kitten began life in Baja California and ended up in California, USA, with his own green card.  When he was a baby, his ears were huge for his face, and with his dark gray coat, he looked like a bat.  Fledermaus is Geman for bat.  Since we know a little German and love opera, Fledermaus he became.  So, he's a Mexican, American, German Russian Blue.

Does that look like a bat, or what?

Faux Paw slipped in through the cat door one evening as a baby and decided to stay.  She had a lot of trouble negotiating the litter box and would step in her business and then track it all over the floor.  This little paw mistake led to her name.

MARCY'S CATS

The siamese cats in Manet's cat prints look just like two of my babies....Mao Tse Tung (Mousy Tongue) and Julius Meezer.  My other cat is named Ho Chi Minh. We felt like since our cats all had Siamese in them, they needed oriental names...the only problem is that due to the way oriental society is constructed...there aren't a whole lot of famous Oriental women. So, we named our little girl Ho Chi Minh so we could call her L'il Ho....and she is one...every time she goes into heat! When she isn't in heat, we call her Hobie Cat...like the sail boats.  And an albino cat named Blackie. I wanted to name her Honky Mo' Fo'...but my ex was afraid every time he went to the front door to call her, he would get his butt kicked.
My family has a history of naming their animals interesting names. Mom had a Blue Persian that she named Cat Ballou (Cat Blue). Then there was Dorian Grey, a short haired gray kitty.
Oh, I also had a dog that we named Ralph...so that the other dogs in the neighborhood could pronounce his name.  My sis had a black Pomeranian that was blind. His head weaved from side to side so he could hear what he couldn't see. She named him Stevie Wonder. She also had a little spotted dog that she felt was too small to be named Spot...so she named him Speck.  (Fledermaus says those last three were funny so we'll let them in this time, but from now on we stick to cats, all right?)

MARILEE'S CATS

I went to a cat show and browsed around the "adopt me" center.  A white kitty put out his paw and snagged my shirt.  I stopped to inquire.  The note on his cage said he had had 5 homes and really needed someone who could handle him--a cause, to be sure.  I decided to take him home and try.  You see, he was deaf.  I thought, at the time of adoption, that I would surely need an aspirin to deal with his antics--ah light bulb--white cat, trouble--perfect.  I named him "Aspirin" (aka. Ass-purrrin). He was a wonderful cat.  I trained him to come when I waved my hands, and to get his attention, I would bang on the floor, bed, couch, etc. He was definately an "ass-purrrin" cat and no trouble at all.  Five homes and nobody could figure out how to handle him.  I'm glad I was there--it's one of my best success stories!!!
I also had "Rorschach" a black and white kitty named after the ink blot test. Then there is sweet "Azzizi".  He was born with crossed eyes, a broken tail and his mother tried to bury him in the litter box. His name means "Precious One" in Swahili.

JENNA'S CAT

One of the cats I am owned by is named Froggy.  Her full name is The Mighty Froghunter.  Her name came from the fact that we found her as a little kitten in the woods. It was the season of breeding for the frogs in our area, and frogs were hopping all around.  This tiny kitten was trying to catch the biggest frogs she could find!  I was a Biology major in college at the time, and Froggy's name turned out to be very appropriate, because about a year later I had to collect frogs for a class.  I brought 5 frogs home and put them in the bathtub so I could clean out the bucket.  Froggy hopped right into the tub and grabbed a frog and took off!  Jenna Brown--owned by Panda, Bear, Froggy and Mouse cats

ROSS EDWARDS' CAT

I brought home a stray kitten that had been abandoned at my mother's house. Having had indoor cats before, and being tired of vacuuming cat hair way too often, I determined that THIS cat was going to be an outdoor cat. It grew up during the summer never having set foot indoors. He was a rather nervous cat. He always seemed to be looking over his shoulder, often cringing at the slightest noise. The only time he seemed at peace was when he took the time, and it was frequent, to scratch. Most of this time we just called  it "the cat" or "Grey". Then came winter. I quickly took pity on the poor thing and let him indoors at night. We soon discovered the reason for the frequent scratching, multitudes of fleas! It wasn't long before every carpet in the house had them. This gave rise to his Roman-sounding name, for he was, indeed; Anestophles (A-nest-o'-fleas)!

DIANE'S CATS

We have named our siamese cat RUDOLPH VALENTINO, as he was born on valentine's day, and like VALENTINO he is just as great a lover.  The name suits him very well. We call him RUDI for short.  He will be 14 years old this February 14/2002 and we hope he will be aroound for a few more years.  So far he's been very healthy.  He is quite a character.  He opens cuboard doors and rattles our bedroom door knob when he wants to come in, as my husband doesn't let him sleep with us, since cats like to sleep on your legs and my husband has poor circulation in both legs.  So he sleeps with our other siamese cat, ELEANOR, who is named after my husband's MOTHER, whom we loved dearly.  We thought we would call her ELLIE for short but that didn't suit her, as she is quite an elegant little lady, so she gets her full name ELEANOR. Hoping this will be of interest to you.  Diane Julian

LINDA'S CAT

Our cat's name is Stripey Dave.  She is a tiger stripe short hair.  When she came to live with us our rather large German Shepherd "Tucker" would often play with her.  She would jump at his neck and hold on as he walked around.  Someone commented they looked like David and Goliath.  We were already calling her Stripey Cat so it evolved into Stripey Dave.  Linda Tanner

GURRY'S CAT

Obelix was a firstborn and the fattest of 5 kittens, 2 years ago (Feb. 15).  He is black but has a red hue on his longhaired coat, thus he was named Obelix, like the big somewhat obese, hairy, stone age character in the Asterix cartoon stories.  While the comic book Obelix is incredibly strong and easily tosses around trees and heavy boulders, our Obelix chases and tosses a toy mouse, but in a remarkable way.  He plays with a furry toy mouse that has a string, that when pulled causes the mouse to vibrate and move in circles. The first time Obelix played with the toy he managed to learn how to pull the string! He grabs the toy in his paws and pulls the string with his teeth, then chases the runaway mouse. Not funny under the bed at 3 a.m. but otherwise cute.  Gurry at PurrfectPortraits

LORI'S CAT

I have a ten-year-old cat who has really bad breath.  She has always had bad breath.  Her name is "Certs Alert" because every time she yawns, that is what it is...a Certs Alert!  I also call her "Hal" short for Halitosis.  Lori Lynn Anderson

KATHY'S FRIEND'S CAT

CELESTE'S CATS

My evil cat Shmoo has had many names.  When I picked her out at the SPCA (actually, she was the only cat available) she was a fat, feisty 10 mo.s named Maestro.  I figured she had a right to be bitchy, given that she'd been fixed for a second time while at the SPCA.  After I signed the papers for her she jumped up and took a chunk out of the arm of one of the volunteers.  I decided to call her Guano, partially because of the bird drop mark reaching from forehead to nose, partly because of her behavior.  Friends and family suggested that it was cruel to name a cat after excretement, so I named her Shamoo, given her girth & mood/physical resemblence to a killer whale.  This was shortened to Shmoo, although she is not pure white.  I plan on writing a book "The Taming of the Shmoo".  Other names: Puddle Jumper (I had a huge leak in my apartment & could tell when it was raining by her wet feet in my bed), Demon Cat from Hell, and ShmoodlePoodle.
Shmoo's little brother Norm was named after my late father.  He is also known as Moose Meat (a nick name my dad had for us kids).  I also occasionally call him the tamer of the Shmoo, as she is a much mellower cat since his adoption. Norman is the sweetest cat I've ever met.  If he gets over stim'd & starts to bite, he looks thoroughly ashamed and runs away before any damage can be done.  When he was a kitten he tried to nurse at my shoulder.  I had little hickeys from him.  He falls asleep when I sing:
Go to sleep, little Norm,
You are my little kitten,
Go to sleep, dream a dream
Of mousies and cream
He drops to his side, plops his head on my knee and slowly closes his eyes.  It's the only song that works.  My poor husband thinks I'm a mad woman, but damn, I love those cats!  Celeste Coit

KAY'S CATS

I have two funny names....Fritz A Relli...when he was a kitten he would run like crazy thru the house...Fritz A Relli sounds like a race car driver name.  I think so anyway.  Our other cat is Rome O Rathje (rah-chee)..he has a personality all his own...His name is Romeo and our last name is Rathje...so we separated the o and therefore....the name Rome O Rathje was born....Kay, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
