It has been encouraging to see the outpouring of support from so many countries of the world in response
to the atrocities of September 11th.  These photographs from different countries show this attack was a
blow not just against the United States, but also against humanity.  They let us know the anger and sorrow
over these events is shared worldwide.  We are not alone.  And we thank those throughout the world for
their kind thoughts and prayers.

The Mechanicsville Fire Department in Maryland has established a tribute on their website, whereby individuals can light a virtual candle in their own name in remembrance of Sept. 11th.  On September 1, 2002, their goal was to hope for 1000 candles to be lit during the month on their site.  When that was quickly met, the goal became 10,000.  There are now well over that number.  Can we aim for 100,000 for them?  Visit their site at http://www.mvfd.com to light a candle in your own name.  You may pass this along to your friends, and let's all check back at the end of September to see the total number of names from around the world that have been added to the list.  You will be touched as you look through the list and realize these are all individuals, from everywhere, who are united in their grief and are paying their respect to those who lost their lives.

An Internet friend of mine, Panda Gielen, in Holland sent this moving tribute from Europe.

symbol

To all my hurt friends in the USA,

In these days of suffering and insecurity no words will be able to heal the wounds of your hearts and yet, knowing you only by the means of the Internet I can't hug you and so words are all I have to offer now.
Using them I would like to tell you that on Friday we had in Europe our day of praying and mourning. At noon we had three minutes of silence. Now we have them each year when we remember the victims of the second world war. At such moments lots of people pay attention, but never I saw before what happened last Friday. Not only the usual people working at governments or attending schools kept quiet, but this time it was like Holland stopped breathing.
Even the traffic at the highways stopped. All the people in the streets or shops stopped. Everywhere, even in the remote little villages you could hear the heart of the civilized world beat and sending out our deep concern with you all.
Later when I went out to do my shopping I was impressed again by the enormous amounts of flags hanging out half way down. Lots of Dutch flags side a side with the American one. For such a sober country as Holland, were we hardly show emotions on the street, this was pretty unusual. It deeply moved me and for what it's worth I wanted to share this with you.
As far as the future of us all is concerned let's say this. History has proven that hate is like a dragon growing three heads after one has cut off.
I can only hope that we will be able to keep our cools and let, instead of cold hate and a call for revenge, wisdom start blooming from our souls.

with all my heart, Panda,

The following message and pictures are from another Internet friend in Holland.

Thank you so much Eve.
Here are some photo's from our commemoration in the Netherlands of the victims of last Friday 12 o'clock.  Trains and busses stopped for three minutes, t.v. and radio stopped, as you can see car-drivers stopped.  Flags were halfmast high. The photo's are not very good, but in all the Netherlands people were very involved with this tragedy.
Take care,
Yvonne Hamaker

American Embassy in den Haag after attack

Flowers, tears, an American flag. This is the American Ambassy in den Haag.
There were thousands of people last Friday.

the country stands still for three minutes, as cars pull to the side of the highway in The Netherlands

Cardrivers stopped their cars on the refuge lane at 12 o'clock.

The text under the picture reads, "Hundreds of drivers park their cars in the emergency lane at noon, even though the Ministry of Traffic had warned not to do that".

The black matrix sign over the highway reads, "Commemoration, Yes! Where? In a safe place!". Obviously, that didn't work. But I guess as long as ALL cars come to a stop, there's no real danger anyway.

And now some Good News!

Cat, Kittens Found Alive In WTC Rubble

Vet: All Eating Well, Should Recover

NEW YORK CITY -- The World Trade Center recovery effort has
brought plenty of sadness, and some extraordinary tales of survival,
including one of a very World Trade Center catsresourceful cat.

Beneath the rubble, in a forgotten basement of what was once a restaurant, rescuers found
the blast survivor, curled up in a
carton of napkins.

The owner of the restaurant made the discovery about two weeks after the disaster. He immediately called rescuers.

Dr. John Charros said that the cat had given birth to three
beautiful kittens.

"Mom was very emaciated, very thin and dehydrated. She's suffering
from the flu. She's still getting over that now, and had a little
secondary bacterial infection. The babies were in pretty good shape;
they had been feeding well. I think mama weighed in at five pounds
when she was first brought in. She should probably weigh somewhere
between eight and 10 pounds," Charros said.

Doctors immediately hospitalized the animals and predict a full
recovery. Mom has been christened "Hope." The babies are being
called "Freedom," "Amber" and "Flag."

Shelter operators at Brooklyn's Center for Animal Care and Control
said that they've found homes for the cat and kittens. They should
be able to leave the hospital in November.
