Russia's only sniffer cat was killed by smugglers

Rusik, the cat, walked into a police checkpoint a year ago as a stray kitten. The staff quickly adopted it, feeding it on scraps of sturgeon confiscated from smugglers.  He learned the taste and scent very well.  Rusik was later recruited by police at a checkpoint in the Stavropol region, bordering the Caspian Sea, to uncover illegal cargoes of the endangered fish.

A cat's sense of smell is reportedly more sensitive than a dog's.  The problem usually is getting the cooperation of the cat to use that ability.  As it turned out, Rusik's ability to sniff out poached fish hidden in trucks and other vehicles was so good that he had replaced the local sniffer dog.  No matter how ingenious the smugglers were in their attempts to hide the fish, Rusik was always able to point his nose in the right direction and find it.

Sadly, Rusik's career was ended suddenly when he was hit by a car in which he had found smuggled sturgeon some time before.

I know this site is mostly for funny antics and great art, but I have to let everyone know what is happening and find a way to stop it.  The only way I can think of to stop it is to put it out in the public as a warning to all pet owners.  BEWARE OF HARTZ AND SEARGENTS MONTHLY FLEA TREATMENTS!! THEY ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO PETS!!  I treated my cats with the Seargents 3 months flea treatment, and now my 4 month old kitten is dead.  She suffered severe seizures and dehydration without any warning at all.  In less than 8 hours this product killed our kitten.  Please, please if your pets have fleas or ticks spend the extra money and use what your vet recommends.  It could save your pet's life.  My vet told me that they have had other cases of cats suffering neurological damage and death this year due to the Hartz and Seargents products.  Please warn everyone you know.  Misty Normandy

Hi, my name is K.D.  My story is about how my sister's cat (Tiger) was put in our washing machine on spin cycle.

Well, I was on the net chatting to my friends, when all of a sudden I heard this noise like constant banging.  I thought, "Yeah, yeah, it's just the water pipes," because they sometimes do that.  But after about 10 seconds it didn't stop and just kept on going.  So I bolted out of the room and heard the sound coming from the washing machine.  I pulled up the lid, and there inside was Tiger, spinning.  By that time, I was in tears laughing so hard.

I lifted Tiger out and put him on the ground, where he was walking with a lean.  I picked him up and ran to Mom thinking that he was going to die or something.  I told her what happened, and she burst out in tears laughing, as well.  My little sister was crying because we were laughing at him.  Mom stayed up with him all night checking on him, feeding him, and all that.

The next day it dawned on us--how did he get in there?  Well, Mom had taken some things out of the washer and didn't shut the lid--just left it up and the machine still turned on--so if the lid shut, it would go on into spin cycle.....

We haven't told my sister this yet, because she holds grudges.

My Siamese, Blue, was a Seal Point, but he was huskier and darker than the Siamese cats, I have seen at cat shows.  The ones I see now are very skinny, with a different shaped head and a lighter coat.  Blue's coat was light when he was a baby but got darker as he aged.  I had him for 19 years.  He died about 7 years ago and I still miss him.  I think they call them apple head Siamese or the original Siamese.

When I was very sick and stuck in the house in 1999, a good friend looked for a cat for me.  I hadn't had a cat since Blue died and didn't think I could have one, as I live in a co-op apartment that has a no pet rule.  She went ahead and got him, he is a Ragamuffin whose name is Mr. Mistoffelees.  I was keeping him a secret, from the co op board, when we discovered there is a Federal Law for the Disabled, that allows a disabled person to have a pet, as long as it isn't unreasonable.  They take this law every bit as serious as a blind person having a seeing eye dog.  Just thought I would mention this in case you ever know of someone in the US in the same predicament.  The disability can even be depression and the doctor feels a cat will give comfort.  Some cats have been used for high blood pressure.  An organization for housing and the disabled will fight for the person, without the patient having to do anything.  Cleta Bair

This is Blue.  I put the poem next to his picture and have it framed and hanging on the wall.

This is a cute story I found in an old newspaper about a lost cat.
Richard Palmer

Oswego Palladium, Thurs., Nov. 23, 1871

Most Remarkable Cat Journey on Record. - At the office of the Northern
Transportation Co. is a cat which has made the most remarkable journey on record. The name of the cat is "Daisy," and she was born in Ireland.  She was left at the N.T. Co.'s office by some emigrant passengers through here last summer.

She proved to be a remarkable ratter, tackling the monstrous "vermin" like "winkin." About two days since "Daisy" disappeared leaving two kittens of a week old upon the hands of John O'Brien and Mr. Pigeon, employees of the Company. The latter took the infantine cats home and vainly endeavored to bring them up by hand.

Yesterday one of the N.T. Co's. men was crossing the lower bridge from West to East when he met the living skeleton of "Daisy" about midway of that structure. The animal presented the most "bunged up" and forlorn appearance imaginable. She was covered with mud, torn and bruised; her tail worn almost off and her fur sadly demoralized.

She made for the office of the N. T. Company, where she mournfully "wauled" for her progeny. "Daisy" was welcomed back, and properly cared for, but would not be comforted. About an hour after the return of the Milesian feline, the propeller Michigan arrived from Ogdensburg. The captain informed Mr. Henry Stowell and Mr. O'Brien that when he left Oswego on the down trip, he discovered he had carried off "Daisy," who, no doubt, came aboard to see the cook.

Then he carried the animal to Ogdensburg and put her ashore there. This let the cat out of the bag, and disclosed that poor "Daisy," who had been carried off from her little ones, had come afoot all the way from Ogdensburg to Oswego to find them gone the way of all cats.

We desire to say to our readers that the circumstances above related are true in every particular, and that poor "Daisy," though badly used up, is likely to come out all right under the kind care of the N.T. Company's men.

I would LOVE you to tell my cat story.  It is totally true, I would LOVE for people to read it to know that they should not misjudge little creatures that appear as bad, when all they need is love.  This story demonstrates the power of love, for any living creature. Sometimes those that act the worst need love the most.  I was never a cat person until now.  Now I am totally a cat person.

What I Truly believe is... that Egypt is a loving little soul.  He was in my barn for three weeks, making the most mournful sounds.  I took him in and gave him the love that he needed and there was a total transformation.

How we first met was on the 4th of July.  I came home from my house from a barBQ next door, I heard a sound in the kitchen and thought it was a burglar.  I started walking back and this little creature streaked out of my house tearing across my foot leaving a 3-inch bleeding gash.  I went next door with bleeding foot and said "I have been attacked by a cat, I thought it was a burglar, but it was a cat."  My niece said "It was a cat burglar."  I still have the scar.  I tried to make friends with him because he was in such pain, in spite of what he had done to me.  Now he is the most awesome cat ever.  Again demonstrating the power of Love.

He is the very best cat ever!  He likes to wake me up even in the night just to have me pet him.  He likes to touch my eye in the morning to wake me up.  I get a little cat touch on the eye, I open my eyes,  and there he is wanting to be loved.  He will even go to sleep at night, contented with his little cat paw on my face.  This is the most awesome cat ever!  Who adopted me.

I am a cat lover for life now.  It just takes one special cat.  I was actually drawing "cowtoons" with a character in my "cowtoons" I called "splat the cat", because I did not like cats.  This one little tiny precious loving soul, this tiny little being of sparkling energy, showed me the power of love.  He is such a joy to me.

Fabienne's CAT

I am mad about cats !!!.  One cat I had was called Banjul (after the capital of the Gambia where I was born) and he was one hell of a character.  We found him in the gutter in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) he was tiny.  My parents were expatriates and travelled a lot changing posts and therefore countries every 4-5 years or so.  Of course, Banjul followed us wherever we went.  He had his own passport with photo and was very well known to the ground crew of many airlines, especially British Airways.  He had to go to quarantine twice in the UK but he didn’t seem to mind that too much.  He’d flown through most major European cities on transit flights.  He lived in the Ivory Coast, Zaire, Guatemala, Tunisia, England and South Africa.  He finally took his retirement in the UK when I graduated from university and began working.  He always used to sleep with me, often ending up on my head.  One night, in the middle of the night, it was pitch black and I couldn’t find him.  I searched for him in the darkness, finally felt his firm little fury body put my hand under both front paws and gave him a big kiss.  He howled and I wondered why his face didn’t feel quite the same only to realise that I’d picked him up by his back legs and kissed his bottom.  He was quite outraged!  He sadly died in 1995 at the age of 15.  We buried him in the garden and made him a Tombstone with the inscription “Banjul l’Africain” which in French means Banjul the African 1980-1995.  When my parents moved to France in 2001 we dug Banjul up, put his bones in a biscuit tin and buried him again in the garden of our new house in the South of France.  We still talk about him to this day.
